Newsom Recall Vote

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom faces the first gubernatorial recall election in California since 2003 – the only successful one in the state’s history in which Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger replaced Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. Every registered voter in the state was mailed a ballot and voters can answer two questions: whether to recall Newsom and who to replace him with if he’s recalled. Newsom wasn’t allowed to be an option on the replacement question and 46 candidates qualified for the ballot vying to have the most votes to win if he’s recalled.

Newsom Successor Vote

Democrats urged voters to vote no on the recall question and leave the replacement question blank. Republicans competing in the replacement field include talk radio host Larry Elder, Newsom’s 2018 opponent John Cox, and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. If Newsom is recalled, then his successor would be up for re-election in 2022.
