Traveling internationally requires serious planning to ensure that everything goes off without a hitch. Between booking flights and hotels, packing the right travel gear can often get lost in the mix — and that can be detrimental, especially if you forget an international power adapter.

Universal power adapters work in most regions worldwide, so you can use the same adapter on all your future trips. Many have built-in USB-A and USB-C ports for easy device charging, as well. Just note that they do not convert voltage, so don’t use them with single-voltage devices like hairdryers.

This budget-friendly universal power adapter is another CNN Underscored favorite, largely because of its low price. When I tested the device, I had no issues using it in 10+ countries. It also has one USB-C port and three USB-A ports.
The Targus World Power Travel Adapter has individual adapters for each region, all contained in a case that's little more than the size of a pepper grinder. If you're only visiting a single country, take individual adapters to save space in your luggage.
Best power adapters for trips to Europe
If you’re heading to Europe, these adapters will work great across the region and in non-European countries like Morocco that use EU-style outlets. The universal adapters highlighted in the previous section also work in Europe.
One thing to note. Some of these power adapters do not work in the UK and Ireland unless specifically noted. These countries use a different outlet (type G) than the rest of Europe.

If you need to use single-voltage devices — think electric razors and hair straighteners — abroad, you’ll need a power converter. These drop voltage from 220V to 110V, so you can use them safely. Just make sure you read the specifications of the adapter you’re using to ensure it works with your devices.
Note you do not need these to charge most smartphones, laptops and other dual-voltage devices. However, since power converters have multiple outlets, you can use them alongside other devices.
