Why we picked it

The Citi Strata Premier Card comes with generous rewards in multiple categories for a reasonable $95 annual fee. You’ll earn 3 Citi ThankYou Rewards? points per dollar on gas, EV charging, groceries and dining — no other card on this list offers more than 2 points per dollar in all of these categories. The Citi Strata Premier falls short of the Sapphire Preferred in a few small ways. For instance, Citi ThankYou points are slightly less valuable than Chase Ultimate Rewards points, according to travel website The Points Guy. The Sapphire Preferred also offers better purchase protection and travel benefits.

<div>Good/Excellent</div>
Why we picked it

The Amex Green (terms apply, rates and fees) is sometimes underrated, but it offers 3 American Express Membership Rewards? points per dollar spent on dining, transit and travel. The card’s main restaurant-related perk is its 3 points per dollar on dining, including takeout and delivery in the U.S., but its other rewards and perks make it a solid package. For instance, elevated rewards on commute-related expenses (think train and bus fares, among other charges) are relatively uncommon. If you tend to rack up dining expenses while traveling, you may also want this card for its travel perks, including up to $199 per year to reimburse your CLEAR? Plus membership, which offers expedited security screening in a number of US airports.

+ Pros
  • Earn 3X Membership Rewards? points on eligible travel, transit and restaurant purchases including takeout and delivery in the U.S. and 1X points on other purchases
  • Up to $189 in statement credits per year for CLEAR? Plus membership
  • Up to $100 per year in statement credits toward Lounge Buddy airport lounge access
– Cons
  • Annual fee is higher than comparable mid-tier travel cards
  • Base rewards rate is 1 point per dollar
  • Statement credits can be hard to maximize
Highlights
  • Earn 40,000 points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 6 months
  • Earn 3 points per dollar spent on travel, transit purchases and eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide
  • Earn 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases
  • $189 CLEAR? Plus and $100 LoungeBuddy credits
  • Trip delay insurance
  • No foreign transaction fees

<div>Excellent, Good</div>
Why we picked it

The Capital One Venture card earns Capital One miles that you can optimize by converting them into rewards with over a dozen airline and hotel partners. This card sets itself apart with a 2x mile rewards rate, regardless of the purchase category (plus 5x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel). While this isn’t the highest possible return on dining, it’s easy to remember what you get per dollar you spend. There’s also a hefty welcome bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel, which is generous, especially considering this card’s modest annual fee of $95.

+ Pros
  • Welcome bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel
  • Up to $120 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Miles transfer to airline and hotel partners
– Cons
  • Limited bonus rewards opportunities
  • Charges a $95 annual fee
  • Rewards are best suited for travel and are worth much less if you redeem for cash back
Highlights
  • 2x miles on most spending
  • 5x miles on hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel
  • $95 annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Up to $100 credit to cover the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

<div>Excellent, Good</div>
Why we picked it

The Amex Gold (terms apply, see rates and fees) is a darling of the foodie world, and it ties for the highest rewards rate on dining of any card on our list: 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar at restaurants worldwide and on takeout and delivery in the U.S. (on up to $50,000 per year in spending per year, then 1 point per dollar, starting Jan. 1, 2025). If your foodie habits extend to your own kitchen, you’ll also appreciate earning 4 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 spent each year (then 1 point per dollar). Amex Membership Rewards points are valuable and flexible, so the rate of return on dining rewards works out well for people who are partial to the Amex program. The card also provides $10 in Uber Cash each month, which can cover Uber Eats spending. You can also get up to a $10 monthly statement credit to cover eligible dining spending (including Grubhub orders and Five Guys purchases), up to $84 per year (up to $7 per month) in credits toward eligible Dunkin’ purchases, and up to $100 per year in credits toward Resy restaurant spending. But you’ll need to make sure the $325 annual fee is worth it.

+ Pros
  • High return on grocery and dining purchases
  • Points can be redeemed with travel partners for a higher return
  • Up to $20 in monthly Uber and dining credits (enrollment required)
– Cons
  • Charges a $325 annual fee
  • Grocery bonus capped at $25,000 of spending annually
  • Rewards are best suited for travel and not ideal if you prefer cash back

Plus, receive 20% back in statement credits on eligible purchases made at restaurants worldwide within the first 6 months of Card Membership, up to $100 back. Limited time offer. Offer ends 11/6/24.

Why we picked it

With 4x points on dining, the Altitude Go ties for the highest earning rate on dining spending on this list. You won’t have to pay an annual fee for this card, either. But you can’t transfer U.S. Bank’s points to travel loyalty programs, making them less flexible than points earned with programs such as Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards. If you’re looking for a simple rewards program anyway, earning with the Altitude Go and redeeming for cash back is a good way to go.

+ Pros
  • $15 annual credit on streaming services
  • 4 points per dollar on dining, takeout, and restaurant delivery, 2 points per dollar at grocery stores, grocery delivery, gas stations, streaming services and on EV charging stations and 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases

If your business expenses include Grubhub purchases, you can cover them with the card’s up to $240 annual flexible business credit (distributed in $20 monthly increments). How do dining rewards credit cards work?

Dining rewards credit cards earn points, miles or cash back on the money you already spend on eating out. Card reward programs may have different setups, but in general, you can expect the following when you use one of the best dining credit cards:

  • Earn multiple points per dollar you spend at restaurants worldwide: You’ll typically earn points or cash back at an elevated rate of 2x to 4x. A small number of cards offer rotating bonus categories instead of consistent bonus rewards on dining. This means that some non-optimized credit cards can suddenly become a ticket to massive rewards. For example, Discover it? Cash Back * The information for the Discover it? Cash Back has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. earned 5% back at restaurants in the first quarter of 2024 when card holders activated the category (on up to $1,500 spent, then it earns 1%).
  • Rewards can come in many forms, including cash back, statement credits or travel rewards: Credit cards for restaurants offer different ways to reap your rewards. A good card for you will play off your financial habits.
  • Bonus rewards on other categories of spend: Most cards aren’t designed exclusively for restaurant expenses. Many also offer elevated rewards on other expense categories, such as travel or groceries.

Pros and cons of restaurant credit cards

The most obvious reason to use a restaurant credit card is to earn rewards on every dollar you spend dining out. You may also find perks such as exclusive access to restaurant reservations or statement credits to cover some of your dining expenses.

However, you often pay for the benefits you receive — quite literally. Most of our top restaurant credit cards come with an annual fee, up to a high of $550 with the Chase Sapphire Reserve?. A dining card could also entice you to spend more at restaurants than you otherwise would because you want to maximize your earning opportunities.

Best practices for restaurant card users

The first rule of credit card rewards is to pay off your balance in full every month. Otherwise, interest charges can quickly outweigh the value of your rewards. You should do this every statement period unless you have a very specific reason not to — such as enjoying a 0% intro APR. And even then, you should be planning to pay off the balance in full before your zero-interest term is up.

With the responsibility lecture out of the way, here’s what foodies and friends should know about maximizing credit card rewards:

  • Always pay for meals out with the restaurant credit card of your choice. You can get to Hawaii that much faster if you pay for your cash-carrying friends as well, then ask them to pay you back for their share of the food. Obviously, only do this with friends you can trust to repay you.
  • Keep track of your benefits and perks. For example, the American Express? Gold Card and the Amex Business Gold offer monthly credits that can equate to free food. But there are specific rules around how to redeem them, so make sure you read the fine print so you don’t miss out on yummy cheesecake or a hot takeout meal after a long day.
  • Sign up for dining rewards programs. Your points can add up quickly if you’re savvy about stacking earning opportunities. Many travel rewards programs offer dining rewards programs (such as Eat Around Town by Marriott Bonvoy and United’s MileagePlus Dining). With these programs, you can link a credit card and earn bonus points or miles in the relevant loyalty program when you use your card at participating restaurants.

Factors to consider when choosing a dining credit card

First and foremost, the best dining credit card for you will meet you (and accept you) at your credit score, because this conversation is moot if you aren’t approved for the card you want.

After that, different forks for different folks: Pick a card that rewards you best in the way you like to eat and earn. If you want to keep things simple, a cash back card such as the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card may be your best bet. But if you want to optimize rewards for travel, a Chase Sapphire Preferred? Card may be a better fit.

Similarly, don’t splurge on a card with a high annual fee if you avoid fine dining or are on a limited budget. The rewards you’ll earn from your relatively low dining spend may not cancel out the cost of maintaining that credit card.

Methodology

Our money and data analytics teams evaluated over three dozen restaurant credit cards. We then narrowed down our list of the best 12 restaurant cards by giving them a star rating out of five, based on the following factors and our editorial judgment:

Rewards value (35%)

Many restaurant credit cards earn rewards, but not all credit card points and miles are worth the same amount. We used spending data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and estimates of rewards values from The Points Guy to determine which cards dole out the best rewards value.

Welcome bonus value (25%)

Many rewards cards offer bonus cash back, points or miles to consumers who spend a certain amount in their first months with the card. We calculated how much those bonuses are worth using points valuations from The Points Guy, and boosted cards that offer more value.

Select fees (25%)

We considered whether cards charged annual fees or foreign transaction fees, and favored cards with no or low fees.

Benefits (10%)

Cards that offer benefits such as cell phone protection, purchase protection, extended warranty and a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers received a boost.

Annual credits and bonuses (5%)

Credit cards that come with credits and bonuses for spending in categories including groceries, dining, entertainment and gas received a boost.

What didn’t make the cut

The following options are also fantastic examples of top-tier restaurant credit cards. Here’s what you should know about these restaurant credit cards, and why we decided not to include them in our all-star roster.

  • Bilt Mastercard? (terms apply, see rates and fees): The Bilt Mastercard earns 3x points on dining, and card holders can use the Concierge Service to secure dinner reservations (see rewards & benefits). to secure dinner reservations. However, the card doesn’t include a welcome bonus, and Bilt Rewards is geared toward renters.
  • Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express * The information for the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : The Amex Hilton Aspire Card is a beast when it comes to Hilton hotel benefits. You’ll get top-tier elite status in Hilton Honors, and you’ll earn a generous 7x points at U.S. restaurants. However, these benefits aren’t appealing if you don’t stay with Hilton, and the card charges a high annual fee.
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card: The Venture X is a strong member of the premium credit card market, but it earns 2x points on dining, just like the Capital One Venture card, which has a much lower annual fee.
  • Citi Custom Cash? Card * The information for the Citi Custom Cash? Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : This card gives you 5% back on up to $500 spent in your top spending category each billing cycle (then 1%) from a list of eligible categories, including restaurants. The $500 cap may be low for some foodies, and if dining isn’t your highest spending category, you’ll earn just 1% back on all restaurant spending.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The choice between cash back and travel rewards will vary from person to person. People who rarely travel may find cash back cards easier to learn and use. But travel rewards are extremely useful for people who do enjoy traveling, since points and miles can often be leveraged for higher value than cash back.

Several no annual fee credit cards offer high rewards for restaurant dining expenses. Our top choices include the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card, which earns 3% back on dining, and the Altitude Go, which earns 4x points on dining.

Many top credit cards for restaurant dining earn elevated bonuses on other common categories such as travel or groceries. Our top pick, the Chase Sapphire Preferred? Card, offers elevated rewards on travel, online grocery purchases, select streaming services and, through March 2025, Lyft rides and eligible Peloton spending.

Points and miles can vary in value, but the American Express? Gold Card is among the strongest contenders. Card holders receive 4 points per dollar on restaurants and U.S. takeout and delivery (on up to $50,000 in spending per year, then 1 point per dollar, starting Jan. 1, 2025), and the card also includes over $400 in statement credits each year that can be used for eligible dining.

Dining rewards programs include Bilt Dining, AAdvantage Dining (American Airlines), Mileage Plan Dining (Alaska Airlines), SkyMiles Dining (Delta Air Lines), MileagePlus Dining (United Airlines) and Rapid Rewards Dining (Southwest Airlines).?
