<div>Good/Excellent</div>
Why we picked it

The Amex Green (terms apply, see rates and fees) may not have the flashy perks of more premium Amex cards, but for uncapped 3x earning on travel, transit and restaurants, it’s a solid choice. Travelers can more than offset the $150 annual fee if they take advantage of up to $199 to reimburse an annual CLEAR? Plus membership and up to $100 to reimburse Lounge Buddy spending. But if you don’t travel through airports with CLEAR? Plus or airport lounges, it’s tougher to justify this card’s yearly cost.

+ Pros
  • Earn 3X Membership Rewards? points on eligible travel, transit and restaurant purchases including takeout and delivery in the U.S. and 1X points on other purchases
  • Up to $189 in statement credits per year for CLEAR? Plus membership
  • Up to $100 per year in statement credits toward Lounge Buddy airport lounge access
– Cons
  • Annual fee is higher than comparable mid-tier travel cards
  • Base rewards rate is 1 point per dollar
  • Statement credits can be hard to maximize
Highlights
  • Earn 40,000 points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 6 months
  • Earn 3 points per dollar spent on travel, transit purchases and eligible purchases at restaurants worldwide
  • Earn 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases
  • $189 CLEAR? Plus and $100 LoungeBuddy credits
  • Trip delay insurance
  • No foreign transaction fees

Why we picked it

It’s hard to beat the potential return of the Amex Business Platinum (terms apply, see rates and fees) if you have a small business. Card holders can get over $1,000 in value annually toward wireless, Dell, Indeed and Adobe purchases — and travelers will appreciate the up to $200 in annual airline fee credits and extensive airport lounge access. Yes, the $695 annual fee is no small sum, but as long as the card’s benefits line up with your typical expenses and travel habits, you could come out way ahead.

+ Pros
  • Substantial welcome bonus offer
  • Potential to earn over $1,000 in statement credits each year
  • Hotel elite status and airport lounge access
– Cons

Why we picked it

If your small business spends a lot in the Amex Business Gold’s (terms apply, see rates and fees) six eligible 4x bonus categories — which include U.S. wireless bills, U.S. restaurants and U.S. gas stations — you could rack up a ton of points quickly with this card. Up to $240 in annual flexible business statement credits go a long way toward offsetting the annual fee, but if your typical spending doesn’t align with the card’s bonus categories and credits, you’ll want to look for a different card.

+ Pros
  • Opportunity to earn 4 points per dollar on gas purchases
  • High-value redemption options via airline and hotel partners
  • Monthly credits toward FedEx and more
– Cons
  • 4x bonus points capped at $150,000 of eligible purchases annually
  • Charges a $375 annual fee
  • Rewards are best suited for travel and not ideal if you prefer cash back

While your top 2 categories may change, you will earn 4X points on the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these categories each calendar year (then 1X thereafter). Only the top 2 categories each billing cycle will count towards the $150,000 cap.*
  • Earn 3X Membership Rewards? points on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com using your Business Gold Card.*

Why we picked it

Small business owners who prefer simplicity and value will appreciate the Blue Business Plus from American Express (terms apply, see rates and fees). With a $0 annual fee and no bonus categories to keep track of, it’s a good choice for spending outside of typical business category purchases. Just be aware the earning rate of 2x points on purchases is capped at $50,000 per year. After that, you’ll earn 1x points, so if your business spends significantly more than $50,000 annually, another card may be a better option.

+ Pros

  • 2 points for every dollar your business spends on all purchases up to $50,000 each calendar year; earn unlimited 1X points on purchases thereafter
  • Car rental insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty

Why we picked it

There are certainly hotel credit cards with fancier perks, but it’s hard to go wrong with the Hilton Honors American Express Card (terms apply, see rates and fees) if you’re looking for a no annual fee travel credit card. It starts off strong with an impressive welcome bonus for an entry-level card, and its 5x Hilton Honors points on everyday purchases — U.S. restaurants, U.S. supermarkets and U.S. gas stations — can add up fast. And while the automatic Silver elite status the card offers isn’t especially valuable, it does unlock a lucrative benefit: Elite status holders with Hilton get the fifth night free on standard room points stays.

+ Pros
  • High earning rate for grocery and other purchases
  • $0 annual fee
  • Complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status
– Cons
  • Hilton points are less valuable than other rewards (on average)
  • Light on additional benefits
  • Earning rates are limited to U.S. purchases (except for those made at Hilton properties worldwide)

  • Earn 100,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after you spend $2,000 in purchases on the Card in the first 6 months of Card Membership. Offer ends 1/8/2025.

Why we picked it

You’ll get the usual free first checked bag, priority boarding and discounts with the Delta SkyMiles Reserve (terms apply, see rates and fees), but it shines for the elite-like perks it offers. If you’re a frequent Delta flyer, these benefits alone can justify the card’s $650 annual fee. Note that you’ll be limited to 15 visits and four guest passes for Delta Sky Club lounges starting Feb. 1, 2025. If you spend at least $75,000 on your card in a calendar year, you can get unlimited visits.

All information about American Express? Business Gold Card, American Express? Green Card, The Blue Business? Plus Credit Card from American Express and The Business Platinum Card? from American Express has been collected independently by CNN Underscored.

What are the different types of American Express cards?

American Express credit cards fit into four main categories:

You may see cards from other issuers with “American Express” in the name, such as the Navy Federal More Rewards American Express? Card * The information for the Navy Federal More Rewards American Express? Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. . In this case, American Express is acting as the card network, not the card issuer.

All information about Navy Federal More Rewards American Express? Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored.

A card network facilitates payment processing, while a card issuer is a company that provides credit cards. With its own cards, American Express is both the card network and the card issuer.

How do American Express credit card rewards work?

The rewards you earn will depend on your American Express card.

With a co-branded card, you’ll generally earn points or miles through the partner brand. For example, Amex’s Delta credit cards earn Delta SkyMiles. These miles are deposited into your Delta SkyMiles account, not your Amex card account.

With a cash back card, you’ll earn “Reward Dollars” that you can redeem for statement credits. This is a bit of a bummer on Amex cards, because most cash back credit cards from other issuers offer additional options for redeeming rewards, such as a check or deposit to a bank account. That said, cash back does not come with a minimum redemption amount, though you can’t use your cash back to cover your minimum payment. Your cash back will never expire as long as your account remains active.

With a card that earns Amex Membership Rewards, you can redeem for travel, cash back, merchandise and more. Amex Membership Rewards points don’t expire as long as your account is open and in good standing, though you may forfeit points if you violate the program’s terms and conditions.

Minimum redemption amounts and point values can vary depending on the redemption option. For example, most point transfers have a 1,000-point minimum, and travel redemptions require at least 5,000 points.

Points are worth 1 cent each toward flights booked through Amex Travel or hotel stays booked with American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts, 0.7 cents each toward prepaid hotels, cars, cruises and vacations booked with Amex Travel, or 0.6 cents each to cover your charges, for instance.

A business card might be co-branded or earn either points or cash back.

How do American Express Membership Rewards work?

American Express Membership Rewards is a versatile credit card rewards program that earns valuable points.

You can even transfer your points to several different airline and hotel loyalty programs, giving you flexibility and potential for high-value redemptions such as first-class flights abroad and luxury hotel stays with Fine Hotels + Resorts.

Here’s a list of cards you can use to earn American Express Membership Rewards (terms apply):

  • Amex Platinum
  • Amex Gold
  • Amex Green
  • Amex Business Platinum
  • Amex Business Gold
  • Business Green Rewards Card from American Express * The information for the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
  • Blue Business Plus from American Express

All information about Business Green Rewards Card from American Express has been collected independently by CNN Underscored.

You can also earn Membership Rewards points with a personal or business Rewards Checking account, or by signing up for the online shopping portal Rakuten and opting to earn Membership Rewards points instead of cash back. If you already have a Rakuten account earning cash back, you’ll need to open a new account.

Where is American Express accepted?

American Express cards are accepted at 99% of US retailers that take credit cards, according to a 2022 Nilson Report. You can search online to see if a particular US business will accept your Amex card.

Amex reported that over 66 million businesses globally accepted American Express cards as of July 2022, which is more than twice the number that accepted Amex cards in 2017. Still, you should bring a Visa or Mastercard if you are traveling internationally, just in case a business doesn’t accept your American Express card abroad.

What are American Express cards’ benefits?

American Express cards provide different benefits, but, broadly, you can look for the following upsides if you have an Amex credit card.

  • Lucrative rewards: Most Amex cards come with a rewards program. If you choose the right card for your budget, spending habits and lifestyle, you could amass cash back, Membership Rewards points or rewards in a brand’s loyalty program.
  • Access to Amex Offers. Amex partners with retail, restaurant, travel and business merchants to offer card holders targeted discounts or bonus rewards on products and services when they activate an offer and meet a spending requirement. You can log into your account to see the full list of offers.
  • Purchase protections. If you buy a product with your Amex card, you may qualify for an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty, coverage to replace a lost or damaged item, and compensation to cover a return the merchant won’t accept, depending on the card. You can check Amex’s website to read the fine print and confirm that your card has a particular benefit.1

How to apply for an American Express credit card

You can apply for an American Express credit card online or by phone (888-297-1244).

Applying for a credit card requires certain personal and financial information, such as your mailing address, employment status and gross annual income.

Amex’s “Apply With Confidence” feature allows you to find out if you’re approved for a personal American Express card with no impact on your credit score until you accept the card. Since applying for a credit card can lead to a small dip in your credit score, this feature can help you avoid hurting your credit if you won’t be approved for the card.

Which American Express card is easiest to get?

All of the cards on this page require good to excellent credit. On the FICO scale, that’s a score of at least 670. You’ll be hard-pressed to find an Amex card that’s “easy” to get. The issuer doesn’t offer student credit cards, secured credit cards or other options geared toward consumers building or rebuilding credit.

How many Amex cards can you have?

Amex doesn’t disclose a card limit on its website, but crowdsourced data indicates that you can generally have five personal or business American Express credit cards, plus additional Amex cards without a preset spending limit (such as the Amex Platinum or Amex Business Gold).

Are American Express credit cards worth it?

An American Express credit card can be a good choice for consumers with strong credit looking to earn rewards on their spending. As with other credit cards, you’ll want to pay your balance in full to avoid interest charges. If you need time to pay off a larger purchase, you can look for a card with a 0% introductory annual percentage rate (APR).

What are the interest rates on American Express cards?

The interest rate you’ll get on your Amex card depends on factors including your creditworthiness. If your card doesn’t come with a preset spending limit, you’ll see a pay over time APR in place of a purchase APR.

Methodology

Our money and data analytics teams evaluated nearly three dozen American Express cards — from cards that earn Membership Rewards points to cash back cards to co-branded retail, hotel and airline credit cards. From there, we narrowed down our list of the best Amex cards by giving them a star rating out of five, based on the following factors and our editorial judgment:

Welcome bonus value (25%)

A welcome bonus is a great incentive to open a card and try it out, and American Express is especially generous with some of its cards. We assessed these bonuses based on dollar value (for cash back cards) or considering average points values from travel site The Points Guy, with higher grades going to cards with bigger returns.

Rewards value (25%)

Beyond the welcome bonus, we evaluated Amex cards on their ongoing earning potential. Cards that don’t offer strong bonus categories or a low base rewards rate got lower rankings than those that come with spending categories that appeal to a broad range of customers.

Select fees (25%)

In this category, cards with lower annual fees performed better. American Express cards that charge foreign transaction fees (including, oddly, the Blue Cash Preferred? Card from American Express, which has an annual fee) didn’t get as high a grade.

Benefits and annual credits/bonuses (25%)

American Express is well-known for providing generous benefits and an array of annual credits and bonuses tied to making certain purchases. Some of these are easy to take advantage of while others require some effort. Our rankings count the easy-to-use perks and ignore the more niche benefits.

What didn’t make the cut

You may see the following cards on other lists of the best American Express cards. While they all have compelling features, there are reasons why they might not be a good fit for some consumers.

  • Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express * The information for the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : The Amex Hilton Aspire Card has a lot to offer if you frequently stay with Hilton, but it’s got a steep $550 annual fee and travel statement credits you’ll have to remember to use.
  • Blue Cash Preferred? Card from American Express: Its 6% cash back rate at U.S. supermarkets is best in class, but it’s capped at $6,000 in annual purchases (then 1%) (terms apply, see rates and fees). The card’s $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95 makes it tempting initially, but your grocery budget will help determine if it's worthwhile in the long run.
  • Amex EveryDay? Preferred Credit Card * The information for the Amex EveryDay? Preferred Credit Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : With a $95 annual fee, foreign transaction fees, capped bonus rewards on U.S. supermarket purchases and a requirement to make 30 or more transactions in a billing cycle to earn the most rewards, this card is hard to maximize for most.
  • The American Express Blue Business Cash? Card * The information for the The American Express Blue Business Cash? Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : Similar in earning structure to Blue Business Plus from American Express, the Blue Business Cash (terms apply, see rates and fees) is a respectable card for small business owners who want to earn flat-rate cash back without paying an annual fee. But it doesn’t offer the opportunity to earn outsized value like cards that earn Membership Rewards points.
  • Co-branded Amex business cards: Small business cards can offer solid value for business owners who are loyal to these companies. Their welcome bonuses and rewards are often higher than those offered by similar personal cards, but if you don’t qualify for small business cards, they’re a no-go. These include as The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card * The information for the The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card has been collected independently by CNN Underscored.
