Inclusive Sizing.jpg

With the help of thousands of outfit posts flooding social media feeds daily, it’s never been easier to find fashion inspiration. But finding stylish pieces that perfectly fit and flatter your body’s shape? Not so easy. Thankfully, there’s a growing number of size-inclusive brands that cater to a larger array of body types and sizes.

From everyday basics and workwear to formal wear for special events, your clothing should make you feel comfortable and confident. So, if your go-to stores just aren’t cutting it anymore, now could be the perfect time to try some new brands. We asked personal stylists to help us break down what a size-inclusive brand is, their favorite ones to shop and what you can do to better make your clothes work for you.

What does size-inclusive mean?

You may think that a size-inclusive brand only offers a broader range of sizes than mainstream retailers. While it’s true that many of them do offer a greater size range, some go further than that, including cut and fit options designed to better accommodate more than one body shape.

“Brands tend to think that plus-size means ‘big and tall,’” says Peter Nguyen, personal stylist and founder of The Essential Man. “But not all big clients I’ve worked with are tall and not all tall clients I’ve worked with have been big.”

At the other end of the spectrum, Nguyen says that many brands are still overlooking sizes made with shorter men in mind. Though the average height of a man in the US is around 5 feet 9 inches, Nguyen says that during his time working as a designer, the average height of clothing fit models was closer to 6 feet 2 inches.

“What you end up having [are] clothes designed for proportions that don’t fit the average guy,” Nguyen says. “Basics like T-shirts will often be too long for clients. And it becomes frustrating with items that aren’t alteration friendly, like sweaters.”

Consistently struggling to find clothes that fit you properly only adds to the frustration of the shopping experience. Cassandra Sethi, a personal stylist at Next Level Wardrobe, says that many of her clients who struggle to find well-fitting clothing feel they can only shop online since many brands don’t carry additional sizes in their physical stores. She adds that shoppers might also bump up against issues with customer service too. “Usually, staff of retail brands aren’t trained properly on how to fit and speak to all body types, and this causes clients to feel unheard and unseen,” Sethi says.

Even with brands offering more size, cut and fit options, there’s still a chance some clothes won’t fit you exactly the way you want straight from the store. For the best fit, Nguyen recommends putting aside 15% to 20% of your clothing budget for alterations and suggests finding a good tailor that can adjust the clothes to your body’s shape. “Most people don’t fit 100% off the rack,” Nguyen says. “A few tweaks can make anything fit and look like it was bespoke.”

Sethi recommends her clients try on lots of clothing, which can open up a more diverse array of brands, styles and cuts. Though, if that process still induces tireless, dressing room stress, you can always reach out to a stylist for some professional fashion help.

“There is something available for any budget and [goal]. An expert stylist can provide a new point of view for you when it comes to your style and how you see yourself,” she says. “It’ll also lessen the decision fatigue and research, which can feel frustrating if you don’t know what to do.”

To help jump-start your next shopping expedition, we’ve rounded up a list of size-inclusive brands that cater to men’s and women’s styles, some of which come recommended right from our expert stylists.

Bonobos

For menswear, Nguyen likes Bonobos, which, in addition to sizes that range from XS to XXL, also offers an array of different cut options for its tops and bottoms. “Bonobos has options for short and tall lengths on items like button-down shirts and casual pants, as well as [an] athletic cut for those with larger thighs and arms.” He adds that Bonobos also offers a line of extended sizing up to a 54-inch waist and size 54 suit jacket, though these sizes are only offered on select items.

Uniqlo

Proper Cloth

For those who still have a hard time finding their size, even among more inclusive brands, Nguyen recommends exploring custom options. “Proper Cloth is a 100% custom, made-to-order brand that has been great for clients with unique body types or for clients that want to skip alterations altogether,” Nguyen says. Admitting that while it does take a while to find the perfect fit, Proper Cloth also offers free redos on items. “Once you’ve nailed your sizing with the help of the specialists, everything will fit you like a glove,” he adds.

Denim lovers know Madewell for its fan-favorite jeans, and if you’re on the hunt for a new pair, the online shop is an excellent starting point. Women’s jean styles are available in standard, petite, plus and tall sizes with additional lines designed to eliminate waist gapping for curvier bodies and maternity jeans for accommodating growing baby bellies. While Madewell offers a range of cuts for its denim, the sizing is a bit limited with their other products. Most standard women’s styles extend from XXS to XL, though there is an additional plus-sized women’s line as well. The men’s line is even smaller overall with pants and jeans up to a 40-inch waist and tops and jackets ranging from XS to 2XL.

Good American

And because finding the perfect-fitting pair of jeans is always a hard task, Good American is here to help with their Always Fits jeans. Made to adapt with your body as it changes, these jeans are made with four-way stretch and a one-size-fits-four approach, meaning, for example, that one pair of jeans can fit bodies with waist sizes 6 through 12. So if you need to go up a size or down a size seasonally or are between sizes, you won’t need to hunt for an additional pair of jeans once you’ve got these.
