One of the easiest ways to ensure you’re keeping your skin safe in the sun is by sneaking SPF into your everyday makeup products. At this point, we know that SPF is an essential component to any skin care routine — yes, you should be wearing it year-round — and it is even more crucial during the summer when we’re spending more time in the sun. (That’s why we’ve consulted countless experts on the best facial sunscreens to use, the best overall sunscreens, the best waterproof sunscreens and even the best sunscreen sticks on the market.)
Lucky for us, long gone are the days of white cast-leaving drugstore creams. Nowadays, the range of high-quality makeup products that perform beautifully and boast sun protection is super impressive. Ahead, we consulted beauty experts on their go-to SPF-packed makeup products — from tinted moisturizers to foundations, setting powders, setting sprays and more — all of which will keep your skin safe and looking flawless.
?Best tinted moisturizers with SPF
Beauty content creator Geena Hunt describes this product as “the perfect tinted moisturizer for the summer.” Made from a combination of both chemical and physical sun filters, it’s glowy, hydrating and available in 24 shades. “It minimizes my redness but doesn’t hide my freckles,” she explains. Makeup artist Jenny Ventura loves how lightweight this product feels on the skin, describing it as perfect for “those days when you’ll be lying by the pool or going to the beach but want to look a little more put-together.”
Makeup artist Grace Pae calls this option from Tower28 “great for sensitive skin and acne-prone skin.” It’s alcohol- and fragrance-free, and even boasts the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance. “It’s so easy to blend and provides a lightweight and even coverage.”
Ventura’s current favorite tinted moisturizer is this dewy option from Saie, which boasts 100% mineral UV protection. “It’s super creamy, light but with coverage, and will give you the best glowy finish you can wish for,” she shares. “I personally love to use this on those clients that like the no-makeup look.”
Most tinted moisturizers have a glowy or radiant finish, but this option — a fave among many of our experts — is perfect for those who prefer a natural-matte finish. Hunt explains that it “looks very natural, evens out my skin and does not feel heavy,” while makeup artist Neil Scibelli is a fan of the lightweight, gel-like formula that is infused with hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture. “I have combination-oily skin so this is perfect to control the oil all day,” shares Carly Giglio, BareMinerals global makeup artist and brand educator. “I’ve been using it a lot on my clients that need oil control while letting their skin still look like skin.”
If you love a dewy look, this multifunctional product does it all. It primes the skin beautifully, provides enough coverage for a radiant and even skin tone and boasts SPF 50. It layers super well with a range of concealers, too, so simply apply this cream, spot correct and you’re ready to go — skin protected and looking effortlessly flawless.
Celebrity makeup artist Lisa Aharon loves the “natural, skin-like finish” of this tinted moisturizer option. “The oil-free formula works well for all skin types,” she explains, “and SPF 30 is great for year-round protection.”
When it comes to versatile tinted moisturizers that can be “used on pretty much everyone,” celebrity makeup artist Naoko Scintu opts for this SPF 20 product from Laura Mercier. “It has an incredible shade range,” she shares, “and I love that it’s oil-free.”
Best foundations with SPF
Scibelli calls this foundation “an overall great choice for all skin types.” Aharon agrees, sharing that “it blurs pores, leaving skin with a smooth texture,” and the skin care-like ingredients “leave skin feeling nourished and hydrated.” Plus, the extensive shade range makes it easy to find your perfect color. Hunt loves the product’s light to medium coverage and natural finish, sharing that it evens out skin tones while keeping it moisturized.
Celebrity makeup artist Tobi Henney explains that this light-to-medium-coverage foundation is super popular for a couple of reasons. “The coverage is buildable but feels light and fresh on the skin,” she explains, and it “has an incredible shade range.”
“I swear by this foundation for flawless and natural-looking skin that will last all day,” shares Pae. “It has amazing coverage while making your skin still look natural and luminous,” she explains. “It’s not a shiny-luminous finish but more of a satin-luminous finish.”
“The reviews don’t lie,” shares Scibelli, who calls this one of his favorite serum foundations with SPF. “It’s a really gorgeous formula for any aging concerns with a built-in antioxidant serum, vitamin B3 and an SPF of 50,” he explains. “It’s super lightweight, buildable and gives the skin an overall flawless finish.”
Giglio describes this product as a lightweight, skin-improving mineral foundation that’s perfect for summer. “When I want less coverage, I use a fluffier brush for this formula,” she says. “The key is to warm up the minerals and then buff onto the skin for it to turn into a beautiful, creamy texture.” Scintu also recommends this powder foundation, which she describes as mistake-proof and buildable.
“This CC+ cream has SPF 50, which I don’t find in makeup often,” shares Hunt. “A high SPF is necessary for me when I am going to be outside all day,” she explains, adding that this full-coverage foundation “is buildable, does not look cakey and feels very lightweight on the skin.”
Best setting powders with SPF
Giglio describes a great setting powder as key to helping your makeup stay on longer throughout the day and into the night. “I’ve used this on my clients early in the morning and their skin looks flawless and stays on all day as they hit the press circuit,” she explains. “It’s really lightweight and gives a smooth look to the skin along with absorbing oil.” Both Scibelli and Henney recommend this setting power, with Henney adding that “it’s easy to dust on with a soft brush and is good for humid weather conditions.”
“I keep this in my purse, my beach bag and in my kit for SPF touch-ups,” shares Aharon. “It leaves a silky-smooth finish and doesn’t leave me feeling dry in the least.”
“This mattifies any texture, is super sheer and has no flashback when photography is involved,” explains Vo. “I also love that it kills two birds with one stone: it absorbs any excess oil and gives you SPF protection.” Both Aharon and Pae are also fans of the product, with Pae adding that it’s “easy to reapply throughout the day and doesn’t disrupt your makeup at all.
“I’m personally a big fan of brush-on sunscreens on the go, and this is a current favorite of mine,” shares Scibelli. “It comes in a refillable case with a vegan brush built-in,” he explains. “It’s sweat- and water-resistant for up to 40 minutes and has a tint of color built into it so you also get an even finish.”
Best setting sprays and mists with SPF
“This is such an amazing SPF product,” shares Henney, who opts for it throughout the summer months. From Australian brand Naked Sundays, this totally invisible, super-protective setting spray is also packed with hydrating, nourishing and good-for-your-skin ingredients. “Mist this on top of makeup and it’ll also give you some added glow to the skin.”
Makeup artist Nam Vo loves this mist, especially when it comes to bridal makeup. “There’s not a lot of time to touch up,” she explains, “so this makes a quick makeup refresh and SPF reapplication super easy.” In addition to applying to the face, she also opts to apply it to the décolletage and hands as well “to protect those areas with a weightless formula.”
“This is a great sunscreen setting spray on its own or over makeup,” explains Scibelli. “The mist is also packed with antioxidants like green tea and ferulic acid that protect the skin from pollution and the environment.”
Best tinted compacts with SPF
Scintu recommends this tinted compact, which is fragrance-free, formulated with 100% mineral sunscreen and boasts SPF 50. It’s also “good for sensitive skin,” she adds, with tons of reviewers sharing that the cream-to-powder, matte-finish formula is great for covering scars, rosacea and other skin conditions for which a gentle product is a must-have.
Aharon calls this compact powder foundation “a multitasking, all-in-one product that makes touch-ups super easy.” She loves the product’s “fantastic color range,” and that its formulation boasts various skin care benefits.?
For those who can’t resist a touch-up on the go, cushion compacts can be a super useful product to ensure you’re only carrying what you absolutely need. This option from Dior is perfect for blurring any imperfections or redness that might show up throughout the day, helping to control oil and leaving your skin looking naturally flawless.
Scibelli describes this refillable product as “great overall foundation powder, as well as a great touch-up compact on the go.” Not only will the SPF-packed formula protect you from the sun but also against other external aggressors in the air, he explains. Just note that the compact itself is sold separately.
Best lip balms with SPF
“I recently discovered this hydrating lipstick,” shares Ventura. “The colors are super fun, summery and pigmented.” Vo’s also a fan of the product, calling it a true multitasker. “I not only use it on my lips but I’ll use it on my cheeks as well to get that monochromatic look,” she explains. “You can even mix-and-match shades for a healthy, coming-from-within flush — the natural glow is beautiful.”
Scibelli describes this balm as a longtime personal favorite of his. “It's packed with vitamin E, avocado oil and other fruit oils and antioxidants to hydrate your skin while also protecting it from the sun,” he explains. And Ventura’s been using it on her clients for years. One of her pro tips? “Take a little bit of the product and apply it to your hands” for some extra moisture and protection.?
“If you’re looking for a beautiful and luxurious lip balm that hydrates and protects your lips from the sun,” shares Henney, “look no further.” “It’s a splurge, but it feels amazing and keeps your lips moisturized for hours,” Aharon echoes.
Aharon describes this balm as “super soothing” with long-lasting SPF-26 sun protection. The finish is less glossy and more satiny, which makes it a great option for guys or anyone who doesn’t want to look or feel like they’re wearing makeup.
We’re suckers for a deliciously scented lip oil — and this salted-caramel option from Naked Sundays has a permanent spot in our makeup bag. It’s hydrating without being sticky and packed full of antioxidants that keep your lips healthy and protected from the sun. The scent is heavenly and doesn’t leave any sort of SPF taste (if you know, you know) behind.
“This is perfect for adding that hint of berry or sheer pink tint to the lips while also getting a hydrating formula that contains sunscreen,” explains Scibelli.
