How a national park is making sure everyone can easily explore the great outdoors. From CNN, this is 5 Good Things.

For many in the LGBTQ community, finding a chosen family can be really important. A few years ago, Daniel Blevins put out an offer on TikTok to stand in as chosen family for anyone who needed it.

'If you are a same-sex couple that's getting married and you do not have biological parents there to support you, please let me know.

'The East Tennessee hairdresser loves being a dad, but now that his kids are adults with children of their own, Daniel said he has the time to be a father figure to other people, too. Over the past few years, his post on TikTok has grown into Stand In Pride, a nonprofit connecting LGBTQ folks with stand-in family members. Daniel says Stand in Pride has been there for people during their biggest life moments. He's attended weddings and even walked someone down the aisle. But they're also there for the little things.

We had a young trans man who was going on a job interview and didn't know how to tie a tie, and all the dads just rushed in, and one taught him how to tie a tie on FaceTime.

Stand in Pride uses Facebook groups to connect people, with more than 250,000 members combined. And now Daniel says they're getting ready to roll out a Stand in Pride app where people can find and connect with chosen family where they live.

The one thing that's really pushed the growth is just these amazing allies who are like, you know, I have this extra love. I have this extra time to give. If you need me, I'm here.

'A family of black belt taekwondo athletes in Texas heard a woman in trouble and sprang into action to save her from what police say was an attempted sexual assault. 20-year-old Simon An says they heard a scream at the Cricket Wireless store next door.

And it was loud, very loud. I would describe it as a horror scream.

His older sister Hannah told CNN affiliate KHOU when they ran over and opened an employee room door, they saw something horrible.

They saw a man on top of a woman, and the woman was on the ground.

Their father, Grand Master Han An, immediately grabbed the suspect and took him down.

'Automatic self-defense. Automatic taekwondo style.

Our first instinct was just my dad just pulled him off and pinned him in the corner of the building.

Simon and his younger brother stepped in to help their dad, while Hannah and their mother took the woman back to the dojo.

Making sure that she's okay because she needed that after that experience.

'When the police arrived, they arrested the 19-year-old suspect. Court documents obtained by KHOU show he was charged with attempted sexual assault, and CNN reached out to his attorney and Cricket Wireless for comment. The An family has been called heroes for their quick thinking and action.

I thank everybody who's calling us that, but still, I think anybody can do it.

The fire department in the small town of Calhoun, Missouri, was strapped for cash. By the end of the first quarter of this year, the department had just $169 left in the bank. So Fire Chief Mark Hardin could hardly believe his eyes when Sam Sloan invited him over to his house to give him something.

He handed me a check for half a million dollars, and the only thing I could think of was, I've never seen a check with that many zeroes on it before.

Sam is 91 years old. He lives just a couple miles from the Calhoun Fire station. He said he knew the donation would mean a lot to the people of Calhoun.

Well, I picked on Calhoun cause they appreciate it. They appreciate every dollar that I give to him.

Sam's money is being used to buy updated equipment. The department had been using some of the same gear since the 1980s. Mark said this donation is making his community safer.

It can be the difference between life and death. It's not just, I don't want to say just for the fire department, though. It's for the whole community.

Carly Pearson has always loved the outdoors, but a catastrophic injury while fighting a wildfire in 2002 left Carly in a wheelchair and made exploring difficult.

One of the frustrations was when I would go to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a lot of times I was stuck on that greenway or that sidewalk or that overlook because I didn't have that capability to get off that pavement.

'Carly says that feeling of being sidelined is something people with disabilities experience all the time. Now, new programing at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is bringing people off the sidelines and onto the trails. The National Park Service partnered with Knox County and several other organizations to offer adaptive programs and equipment for hikes, mountain bike rides, and kayaking. The park even hosted its first adaptive overnight camping trip this summer using Grit Freedom Chairs. They're a special kind of manual off-road wheelchair built for adventure. Participants on this camping trip hiked uphill and downhill and across two different streams to their campsite. After setting up their tents, everyone gathered around a campfire. Carly said these programs are also about connecting with people.

The big deal of this is the community. When your family and your friends come to this area and they're planning their trip, you can now be a part of that. We just, we don't want to leave people out.

Ranger Katie Corrigan said this is the most rewarding work she's done.

Our national parks are set aside for the people. This is really a giant step in moving towards making the outdoors an inclusive environment for everyone to explore and enjoy.

If you're itching to get away for a weekend but want to visit somewhere that's a little more under the radar, CNN Travel has some ideas for you. They've compiled a list of hidden gems across the U.S. that's full of charm, character, and fun things to do, see and consume, of course. Coming in at number ten is Duluth, Minnesota. CNN's Victor Blackwell got to visit.

You know, what really stood out to me is that everybody in Duluth is so proud of their main attraction, Lake Superior, and not because it offers this fantastic view from almost anywhere in the city when you get close to the coast or because the fishing is great. They say, just drink the water. It's good. I mean, it really is good.

Then there's number nine: Knoxville, Tennessee. It's actually only about an hour away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park is one of the only places in the country where you can see synchronous fireflies.

The fireflies get in groups and they start syncing up and flashing at the same time.

Tour guide Eric Edelmann says it's a spectacular sight.

They flash anywhere between 60 and 80 times a minute.

Coming in at number eight is Grand Rapids, Michigan. Its nickname is Beer City, U.S. because it's got over 100 breweries, distilleries and cideries. But artist Katie Moore says it's known for so much more than its booze.

You can ask anyone in Grand Rapids about art, and they'll tell you what their favorite mural is, what their favorite ArtPrize piece was.

If you like music history, check out number seven on the list: Macon, Georgia. This small city has a huge impact on the American music scene. Charles Davis hosts a local radio show there.

When you speak on what southern rock was and what it meant to the country during the 60s and 70s, that started here.

And we all know how epic the Grand Canyon is. Flagstaff, Arizona used to be just a pitstop town on the way there. But now it's earned its number six ranking as a bona fide hotspot, thanks in part to its beautifully dark skies.

In a pristine dark sky, you can see about 4,500 stars on any given night. In a place like Atlanta or Phoenix, that number is 35.
