Diego Maradona appointed manger of Dorados de Sinaloa

The club is struggling in Mexico's second division

His previous managerial role finished in April

CNN  —

Diego Maradona has returned to football after being appointed manager of Mexican second division club Dorados de Sinaloa.

The Argentine, considered by many as the greatest player in history, is set to replace former boss Francisco Gamez.

The 57-year-old left his last managerial role in April, after failing to secure promotion for UAE side Al Fujairah.

More recently, he was named chairman of Belorussian team Dinamo Brest on a three-year contract last month.

Diego Maradona will take charge of first game on September 15.

‘Welcome to the Big Fish’

Dorados, nicknamed the “Big Fish”, were only formed in 2003. They currently sit third from bottom in Mexico’s second division, having failed to win a single match in their first six league games.

However, there is hope that Maradona will turn around their fortunes after his arrival was announced on the club’s social media accounts Thursday.

Dorados released a short video confirming the appointment, along with the caption, “Welcome Diego to the Big Fish!”

Maradona is expected to take charge of the club’s next league game on September 15 after being unveiled to fans at the weekend.

It’s not the first time the Mexican club has brushed with football’s elite. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola finished his glittering playing career with six months in Sinaloa in 2006.

Health scare

Maradona scored 34 goals in 91 appearances for Argentina. Notably, he was captain of the team that won the 1986 World Cup before a less successful spell as national coach between 2008 and 2010.

This latest job will be his sixth in management and perhaps the most surprising after a health scare two months ago.

There were concerns over the his condition during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He was treated by doctors during Argentina’s final group match against Nigeria.
