Yamaha's Jorge Lorenzo stands proudly atop the Qatar podium after his victory in this season's inaugural Grand Prix. Andrea Dovizioso of Ducati claimed second, while Marc Marquez of Honda seized third.

The traditional night-time curtain raiser is always a race to savor. Maverick Vinales of Team Suzuki is pictured on the grid as he prepares for the green light.

Ducati's Andrea Iannone led early on, but crashed out on the sixth lap. It was his teammate Dovizioso who eventually claimed a podium spot.

Dovizioso was clearly delighted at his strong showing. "Starting off the season like this is a dream. I am really happy," the popular Italian told reporters after the race.

It was all about Lorenzo in the end, though, as the reigning champion crossed the line with seconds to spare.

Up next on the MotoGP circuit is the Grand Prix in Argentina. Can anyone stop Lorenzo? Have your say on Twitter at CNN Sport.
