Evans was released from prison in October 2014 after serving half his five-year sentence. Oldham and Sheffield United pulled out of deals to sign him due to pressure from fans and sponsors.

In the season before his incarceration, Evans scored 26 goals for United in League One -- the third level of English football. His conviction was quashed in April 2016, and a retrial was ordered.
