Police charge along the streets. "The sad thing is, in 2012 the Turkish government allowed labor unions and leftist parties to hold a rally in Istanbul's Taksim Square," says Watson. "That was a peaceful May Day attended by tens of thousands. For the last two years, the state has banned rallies there and the result has been violence, riots and police crackdown."
