It started off as a parody to the widely traded digital currency Bitcoin, but now Dogecoin is becoming a popular cryptocurrency in its own right. The coins' playful symbol is a Shiba Inu, inspired by an Internet meme in which "doge" became another term for "dog."

Matt Thompson, a user of cryptocurrency, decided to accept Dogecoins as a form of payment for his Wisconsin vacation home which he put up for sale last summer.
Although it started as a joke three months ago, Dogecoin's community has come together to finance several causes, including raising $30,000 on Crowdtilt to send the Jamaican bobsled team to the Sochi Winter Olympics. Here's the team sporting their check and Dogecoin T-shirts.

Billy Markus, the creator of Dogecoin, says the cryptocurrency is meant to be fun and accessible. That could explain the silliness of its website, which features a Shiba Inu zipping around in a rocket ship. "I hope Dogecoin continues to grow as the Internet's tipping currency and brings people joy," he said.
