A painting donated to Britain's National Trust three years ago has been identified as a self-portrait of Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn.

The picture was originally believed to have been painted by a pupil or follower of Rembrandt, but X-rays and analysis of the techniques used show it to be by the master himself.

The picture is on display at the National Trust's Buckland Abbey in Devon, southwest England, and will be sent for further tests and cleaning later this year.
