Keeping it in the family —
Like mother, like daughter. Shirley Hughes and her daughter Clara Vulliamy together after working on their first collaboration, "Dixie O'Day". A model of Dixie and his sidekick Percy is in front of them on the table.

Kindred collaboration —
The first book in the new "Dixie O'Day" series is due out later this year. It is the first time the mother and daughter illustrators will have combined their talents.

Illuminating illustrations —

Hughes' self-portrait —
In 2002, British author and illustrator Shirley Hughes released her autobiography entitiled, "A Life Drawing" reflecting on her wealth of experience from the past half century. The memoirs featured a self-portrait from Hughes on the cover in her characteristic intricate style.

'Dogger' —
Shirley Hughes' classic picture book "Dogger" is one of her most beloved titles and tells the story of a little boy who loses his favorite toy.

'Alfie' —
Now celebrating its third decade of publication, Hughes' "Alfie" series -- concerning the adventures of an ordinary four year-old boy -- is another popular favorite.

'The Bear with Sticky Paws' —
Her daughter, Clara Vulliamy started focusing on writing and illustrating children's titles after she had her own kids.

Up to mischief —
Vulliamy's story of the "Bear with Sticky Paws" begins when a lovable but mischievous bear turns up on Pearl's doorstep. Throughout the day Pearl and the bear have fun but make a mess of the house. That is, until Pearl's mother returns home.

Not so similar —
They may be mother and daughter, but Vulliamy's illustration style is very much her own. While Hughes tends toward detailed and realistic depictions, Vulliamy creates dream-like sequences of fantasy worlds and talking animals.
