Lytro works by employing a micro-lens array to capture the entire light field before focusing the information captured onto a central sensor. Collecting all light data enables users to alter a picture's focus and perspective long after the image has been taken.

Steve Jobs asked Ng to demonstrate the technology at his Palo Alto home. "It really was an incredible experience. Not too many people have the chance to do that. Like many people out there I'm inspired by the level of attention to detail, design and execution of Apple products," Ng said.

The first commercially available device was released in February this year. Prices start at $399.
