The Black Panther —
Eusebio waves to fans during the a Euro 2008 group match between Portugal and Turkey. He has been an ambassador for his nation long after the end of his glittering career at club and international level.
North Korea's nemesis —
Eusebio is most famous for singlehandedly putting Portugal into the semifinals of the 1966 World Cup with four unanswered goals against North Korea. His team had trailed 3-0 and looked set for an embarrassing exit, but went on to win 5-3.
Pele outshined —
Eusebio's two goals against Brazil helped eliminate the defending champions at the group stage as Portugal won 3-1. Brazil's star player Pele had to remain on the pitch despite being injured after receiving several brutal tackles, as substitutes were not allowed.
Portuguese great —
In 2010, Eusebio was honored by Europe's ruling body UEFA for his services to football, receiving the award from president Michel Platini. He scored 638 goals in 614 appearances for Benfica in 15 years at the Portuguese club.
Health worries —
In 2007, Eusebio had surgery to unblock arteries that carry blood to the brain. He and his wife Flora explained the situation to the media before leaving the Lisbon clinic.
